Elettra written by Sofocle, directed by Gabriele Lavia, is the first play of the 52nd cycle of classical performances at the Greek Theatre of Siracusa; a season entirely devoted to women.

PLOT:

Orestes, son of Agamemnon, come back to Mycenae with Pilades and the Paedagogus, after a long absence. In Mycenae, on the orders of Apollo, he must avenge the death of his father, who was murdered by Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus to usurp the throne. When he was a child Orestes, the heir to the throne, had been saved from certain death by his sister Electra. She entrusted him to a man, who kept Orestes away from the palace intrigues. Since that day Elettra, who hates the two killers, had lived with the hope tha Orestes return to avenge his father’s death.

When Orestes returns to Mycenae, he spreads the fake story of his death. Seeing the joy of the mother Clytemnestra and the desperaion of her sister Electra, he understands her sister’s loyalty. So Orestes reveals his identity to Elettra and organizes a plan with her sister to exact his revenge.
