China – Moving Art and Gauguin – Diary of Noa Noa

From November 15th to March 31st 2020 Palazzo della Cultura hosts two extraordinary exhibitions with a single entrance.

CHINA – MOVING ART

The exhibition includes works of contemporary art, but also of ancient art of high craftsmanship and propaganda art related to the years of Maoism and the cultural revolution.
Works of artists linked to the country’s cultural and political tradition are exhibited, as well as examples of artists critical of Chinese society, as 𝗔𝗶 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝘄𝗲𝗶 , 𝗫𝗶𝗮𝗼 𝗟𝘂, 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴. Protagonists of the famous “Avantgarde” exhibition which was held in Beijing with the occupation of the National Art Museum and which culminated with the arrest by the police of the artists who participated in the protest put in place with that exhibition.
There are also some of the protagonists of the current, less critical generation of this era of economic, social and cultural openness and, with a well-being that is involving large sections of the population: 𝗭𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗶, 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝘂 𝗬𝗮𝗻, 𝗪𝘂 𝗗𝗲𝘄𝘂 𝗲 𝗫𝘂 𝗗𝗲𝗾𝗶.

On display, over sixty works, including the 21 woodcuts designed and created by Gauguin, specially to illustrate his first Polynesian diary and printed by his friend, Daniel de Monfreid.
The works on display enclose and tell the whole wild, primitive and shamanic world that struck and inspired Gauguin’s art.
Together with the magical woodcuts, terracotta extraordinary sculptural works, a terracotta called “Hina et Tifatou or Vases aux Quatre Dieux” of which a specimen is kept at the Musee d’Orsay “and which has recently been exhibited at Moma in New York, will also be exhibited , flanked by a bronze “Tii a la coquille or Idole a la coquille” taken from carved wood, in 1896 and, currently also kept, also at the Musee D’Orsay in Paris.
