The naturalistic reserve of Vendicari, thanks to the presence of quagmires, areas cherished as a resting place for migratory birds, is the most important humid area in the Southeast coast of Sicily
Officially established in 1984, the park’s history has its roots already in the Hellenistic age.

It extends for about 1,512 hectares, in five quagmires: the Small, the Great, the Bush, the Sichili and the Scirbia. The park includes not only the beautiful beaches with crystal clear sea (awarded by Legambiente) but also monuments dating back to different eras, from the latomie used in the old city of Eloro, to the Byzantine buildings, to the Sveva Tower built to repel Saracens pirates’ attacks, to the eighteenth century Tonnara of Vendicari.

The beauties of the reserve and the rich flora and fauna which characterize it, allow enthusiasts and less experienced to carry out activities such as birding, snorkeling and hiking, that make them enjoy even more the charm that the reserve has on visitors
