Tower of Capo Passero

Culture, Monuments
Portopalo di Capo Passero

On the island of Capo Passero is the fort built in the early seventeenth century. The tower has a square shape and consists of two levels. The rooms of the fort are open only to the courtyard, except for the eight windows on the four sides of the building. On the portal there is the coat of arms of King Philip III, represented by an eagle with a shield with heraldic emblems.

The imposing building protected the city from Turkish attacks. The fort withstood both the attacks of the invaders and the terrible 1693 earthquake that devastated much of the city of Val di Noto.
Over the centuries the tower was intended for different uses: prison, place of confinement for soldiers, telegraph station and as lighthouse.

The access to the castle is not allowed.
