Piazza Goliarda Sapienza (former Piazza delle belle)

A tangible example of the rebirth of San Berillo is “piazzetta delle Belle“, named after Goliarda Sapienza.

The tribute to the writer, filmmaker and poet from Catania, born in the San Berillo area, bears witness to the complex life of the author of the book “The Art of Joy”, which was published after her death. Goliarda was the daughter of a grumpy socialist lawyer and a mentally unstable socialist organiser from Lombardy. The writer, well acquainted with the atrocities of asylums, was imprisoned for theft and lived her life on the edge.

The square, part of a wider urban renewal project, has always been a popular meeting point in the evenings for local people.
