The Public Library Ursino Recupero was established in 1931 following the acquisition of the collection of books donated by Antonio Ursino Recupero.

Even today it is in the premises of the ancient Benedictine library: the Refectory small, the room Guttadauro, the Museum, the Elephant Corridor and the Hall Library-Museum Mario Rapisardi.
Since 1868, when the library became municipal property, up to today, this has been enhanced by various library collections and by the library of Mario Rapisardi.

Today the heritage in it kept is composed of more than 270,000 volumes. They are mostly Catania and Sicilian works, illuminated codes, manuscripts, parchments, newspapers and magazines. The library offers many services including: guided tours, bibliographic information, conferences and cultural events.

In 2002, thanks to the richness of its heritage, the Public Library Ursino Recupero has been declared a World Heritage Site.
