Throughout the year, go to the castle for admiring its ruins, history and beautiful views

In the area of Priolo and of the Monti Climiti stands the Castelluccio di Monti Climiti (castle of Climiti mountains), also called Castelluccio di Priolo. It is considered one of the most important military monuments of Middle Age, and it is believed that it was built around in 1000, even if we knew about it from 1300.

The castle was extended and fortified by the will of Conte di Augusta Raimondo III Moncada to better control the area affected by the fights between local people and Spanish ones. The horrible earthquake of 1693 almost razed it down.

It is made by a double circle walls which enclosed the main tower (useful to overlook the coast) in which they were located big underground storages and rainwater chambers. At the east of the castle, next to Cava Case Mulino, there is a path known as “Scala dei Provenzali” (Stair of Provençal).

Admiring Castelluccio you will be delighted not only by the ruins and its history but also by the beautiful panorama you will see. You will overlook the northern coast of Siracusa up to the “good giant”, the mount Etna.
