Megara Hyblaea is a Greek colony dating back to the half of the seventh century BC. Founded in 728 BC. by settlers from Megara Nisea, the colony was built on a pre-existing Neolithic settlement.

The original city wall consisted of several gates and in the outside there was the necropolis, in which were found outfits that witness the wealth and prosperity of the city (now preserved at the archaeological museum Paolo Orsi).

Destroyed by the tyrant of Gela, in 483 BC., and by the Romans in 213 BC. the city was rebuilt on a smaller area with new walls. The remains of the city witness the different phases through which the city passed.
