Via Castello - 96011 Brucoli

Brucoli Castle was built by King Giovanni II of Aragon in the late fifteenth century as a gift to the queen. Positioned on the bay fronting Catania’s Gulf, the castle had mainly a defensive function. Beyond monitoring and protecting the port of Brucoli from the assault of barbarians, the position of the castle allowed the control of the sea trade carried out in the port-channel.

Originally the fortress had a rectangular shape and there was just the central tower. In later times numerous architectural elements, including the defense walls and, at the corners of the original building, four circular towers, have been added.
