“Io, Renato Guttuso” the Sicilian artist’s exhibition in Modica

From April 19 to October 19, 2025, the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso in Modica (Ragusa) hosts the exhibition “Io, Renato Guttuso”, curated by Giuliana Fiori and Anna Papale, and promoted by the cultural association Sikarte.
This exhibition, the second stage of a project that began in 2020 in Noto, offers an intimate and multifaceted portrait of the Sicilian artist through a selection of oil paintings, drawings, and theatrical set designs, created between the 1930s and 1980s.
The narrative path explores both Guttuso’s private and public life: from his deep ties to Sicily and Rome, to his romantic passions, explorations of eros, and commitment to political and social causes. His theatrical sets and 1950s costumes further enrich the artistic dimension on display.
The exhibition venue itself enters into dialogue with Guttuso’s work, sharing his tension toward social justice and his belief in culture as a tool for emancipation and unity.
The show offers an evocative experience in the baroque heart of Modica and is held under the patronage of the Sicilian Department of Cultural Heritage and Identity, the Municipality of Modica, the Sicilian Regional Assembly (ARS), the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso, Enjoy Barocco, and MUSEUM – Observatory of Contemporary Art in Sicily.
