The largest open-air sculpture exhibition by Igor Mitoraj lands in Sicily

“The gaze of Igor Mitoraj: Humanitas and Physis” is the largest outdoor exhibition ever realized of the sculptural works by the Polish artist. It will be on display in Sicily from March 26, 2024, to October 31, 2025.

The exhibition will feature 27 monumental works that reinterpret classical aesthetics, emphasizing the fragility of contemporary man. The works will be displayed within the Archaeological Park of Neapolis in Syracuse, while the bronze sculpture “Cracked Theseus” rises 1700 meters above the lava stones of Mount Etna, and the winged sculpture “Ikaria” gazes out towards the Mediterranean from the space in front of the Maniace Castle in Ortigia, symbolizing the encounter between peoples and cultures.

Such an ambitious cultural project has required an unprecedented effort from an organizational, technical, and scientific standpoint for the transportation, installation, and arrangement of grandiose works such as “Dedalo”, a bronze sculpture placed next to the Ear of Dionysius; the gigantic resin work “Torso Croce” Arena Verona, which evokes redemption and inner renewal in the Grotta del Salnitro; or “Luci di Nara II”, which, with its face of white travertine, restores purity and hope in the face of the signs of cruelty and suffering that still seem to linger in the Roman Amphitheater today. Cultural and emotional engagement is further enhanced by the direction of lights and the dissemination of specially created sounds and music, as seen in the installation of the large bronze face “Tindaro” in the dark depths of the Ear of Dionysius.
