The exhibition hosted at Palazzo Valle, located at Via Vittorio Emanuele II 122 in Catania, explores the connection between contemporary art and the Sicilian cultural context. Featuring over 70 works that reflect the diverse artistic landscape of Sicily in the 20th century, the exhibition aims to bring to light and enhance Sicilian art, which is often overlooked in mainstream artistic circuits.
In today’s world, is it meaningful to focus on the relationship between Art and Territory?
In response to this crucial question, the Puglisi Cosentino Foundation aims to share with its visitors the knowledge of the historical and artistic scenario of Catania and Sicily. This heritage goes beyond traditional academic teaching and delves into significant social, political, and cultural issues.
Exploring the Uniqueness of the Sicilian Artistic System
Compared to other Italian regions, what is evident is the absence of a consolidated art system on the island, which has led artists to develop a personal style detached from the major European artistic movements. Due to this gap, artists have found themselves forced to become organizers, critics, and talent scouts, ultimately building a local artistic network.
Indeed, there isn’t a single Sicilian artistic environment but rather various centers of aggregation and debate. This awareness is the basis of the exhibition title “Risvegli” which invites viewers to a deep reflection on art: it can arise and thrive even in local contexts, often overlooked, but deeply tied to the social, economic, and cultural changes of Catania.
