Via Santa Caterina - 95024 Acireale

Nature lover? Walk the lava stone path and reach the beach Acqua del Ferro. You should do this.

The village of Santa Caterina, formerly known as “Cavallari”, is made up of narrow streets decorated with flowers and citrus trees.

The village is located on one of the highest lava ridges of Timpa. In the past, its location was used as a lookout point; today, thanks to it, from the Belvedere Square you can see the beauty of the coast of Calabria and Taormina. The impressive view is further enriched by the precipice on the sea of the reserve. From here you can admire the beach below, accessible by a path near the church of Belvedere.

The path, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, leads to the source of Acqua del Ferro (Iron Water). The small beach is characterized by rocks with a particular reddish color given by iron content of the water source. In the imagination of Acireale’ people this reddish color derived from the blood of Aci, young shepherd who felt in love with the nymph Galatea.
