La Timpa Natural Reserve

“La Timpa” natural reserve is characterized by the presence of lava ridges that have stratified over the centuries. This peculiarity is made evident by the different shades of the rocks, with the sedimentations from the first eruptions being light-coloured and the more recent ones being dark.

The reserve can be reached from SS114 state highway, through the “Chiazzette” trail. The tortuous path that heads down to Santa Maria La Scala, is surrounded by nature and full of fabulous panoramic points. The rest area is at the Tocco fortress, a Spanish outpost from the 17th century.

The thick vegetation of the reserve is all around: ivy, lemon trees, mastic trees and wild olive. This has made the reserve a favourite nesting place for several birds of prey.

It was declared a natural reserve in 1999, extending from Capomulini to Santa Maria degli Ammalati. Its pebble beach, clear water and beautiful landscapes set it apart.
