Piazza Giovanni Verga - 95129 Catania

Piazza Giovanni Verga is an important civic tradition place of Catania; it is crossed by the Corso Italia and here there is the courthouse of the city.

It was dedicated to the memory of the writer Giovanni Verga only in the twentieth century. Previously, the square was a real military training camp and it was known as Piazza d’Armi.

At the center of the piazza Verga is the Fountain of the Malavoglia made by Carmelo Mendola, that it dates back to 1975 and represents the tragic sinking of Providence described in the novel “I Malavoglia” by Giovanni Verga.

The subject of the work is, therefore, the dramatic scene starring the suffering bodies of the protagonists while they try in vain to save themselves from the fury of the storm. The realization of the sculptural complex, that is charaterized by modern lines, lasted 19 years.
