Stories and creatives from Catania and its surroundings
Citymap SiciliaParaphrasing the words of Luigi Pirandello, creativity is one, no one, a hundred thousand. As the faces, the stories and the production of creatives from Catania and its surroundings, who believe in a possible future in our island.
One of them, Alice Valenti, artist of Sicilian carts, will go at the Salone del Mobile in Milan presenting an ambitious project: to paint the stories of the paladins on…Vespa. Others experience art forms using ceramics, precious fabrics, recycled material, or even a concrete wall.
ALICE VALENTI
Imagine the vivid colors of a Sicilian cart, to take with you on a walk on a Vespa. You can! Alice Valenti is an artist who has inherited from his grandfather the art of working wood and paint stories of Sant’Agata and the paladins of Sicily on Sicilian carts. Pupil of the illustrious Domenico Di Mauro, master of Sicilian cart recently deceased, Alice has translated this mastery in painting the wooden carts to modern Piaggio wasps, who will also present at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The artist also creates the Sicilian decorations of refrigerators Smeg, which will achieve for Dolce & Gabbana.

Cartura is like a magic cylinder and you can find puppet theater, set design, visual communication, events and, of course, beautiful objects such as lamps and ornaments created in paper and recycled materials, inspired by the colors and legends of Sicily dream. Flying to believe.
TURI CALAFATO
Turi Calafato chased a dream. He was a pharmacist in Catania, but he has got a strong artistic sensibility. He attended a 20-hour course of photography and…from this day he collects awards! Like the special World Press Photo in the Daily Life Stories section. And Sicily is always inside his inspirations: take a look at his sicilian photoshooting “A day on the beach”.
TIZZINI
Tradition, art and love for Sicily: this is Tizzini’s world. Tiziana Nicosia and her mother Adriana Zambonelli create stylish products, inspired by the stories of Orlando, Angelica and Saracens. They make coffee, themed accessories and shoes with Sant’Agata or Etna, the trinacria and Sicilian carts. Unique pieces inspired by precious Sicilian memories. For example, Tizzini use palma nana to create her exclusive bag called “coffe”.
VLADYART
The craftsmanship is, literally, “an occupation in which the profits and decorative items are made completely by hand or using only simple tools.” Vlady is a visual artist from Catania and its treasures are brush and spray can. From external intervention to large video installation: there are many opportunities to express art. And Vlady knows this well and spread art all around the city, often without permission in the streets spreading messages and writing stories and art on the walls of Catania.
