Performance: 10 years of ‘Ntuppatedde

‘Ntuppatedde at Palazzo Biscari: A visual tale in the feminine that blends tradition and freedom of expression
In the tenth anniversary of the ‘Ntuppatedde‘s appearance, we invite you to immerse yourself in the incursions into the celebration of Saint Agatha, which will take place on Saturday, February 3rd, at Palazzo Biscari in Catania.
A unique journey conceived and directed by Elena Rosa, aiming to explore multiple perspectives on femininity and the figure of the ‘Ntuppatedda. A narrative that comes to life through captivating performances, where women, elegantly dressed in white garments with customary unity, will interact with polyphonies of voices, sounds, images, and videos of the Agatha festival, all enriched by the extraordinary photographs by Daniele Vita.
Who are the ‘ntuppatedde?
Until the end of the nineteenth century, the ‘Right of Ntuppatedda’ granted women of any social class the freedom to move around the city during the festivities of Saint Agatha. In an era when women were subordinate to men, the ‘Ntuppatedde’ could wander concealed by a black cloak, winking and receiving gifts from men. This tradition, prohibited in various historical periods, has tied them to the celebration of Saint Agatha.
In 2013, director Elena Rosa revisited the figure of the ‘Ntuppatedde’ through an urban performative incursion, promoting a rebirth of the feminine. Today, this ritual manifests through glances, dances, and symbols during the gathering of the ‘candelore’ on February 3rd, contributing to challenging the patriarchal dynamics of the festival.
Do not miss an event that draws from the vibrant energy of the Catania community, where tradition and innovation merge into a unique and unforgettable mix.
