Porticciolo di Ognina

Porto Ulisse, more commonly known as Porticciolo di Ognina, located in the maritime village of the same name, is one of the most evocative places on the Catania coast, a small landing place that preserves ancient stories and enchanting views. A few kilometers from the center of Catania, this small port is a corner of the sea, light and memories: it is the place where a seaside village full of charm finds its breath.

A place between myth and history

According to tradition, Ulysses found refuge here during his journey narrated by Homer, which is why the small port bears his name. In medieval times, Ognina was a thriving seaside village, later obliterated in the 14th century by an eruption of Etna that submerged much of the village. The new core developed on the lava flows, which still retains the soul of the fishing village today.

Porto Ulisse is not only a place to admire, but also to experience. The village of Ognina is famous for its popular festivals linked to the sea, such as the celebration of ’8 September in honor of the Madonna Bambina – “Festa da Bammina”, which combines faith and tradition, accentuating the link between land, sea and popular devotion in a scenographic context on the sea.

Furthermore, at the end of the year, the famous event “San Silvestro a mare” has been held for over sixty years, an unmissable meeting for athletes, swimming lovers and simply curious people eager to welcome the new year by diving into the sea, in a completely unique.
