San Domenico palace

Culture, Monuments
Piazza San Domenico, 5 - 98039 Taormina

The Hotel San Domenico and the homonymous square where it is located take their name from the former convent of the Dominican friars. The palace, transformed into a convent, was donated in 1430 to the Dominican friars from the monk Damiano Rosso, a descendant of the Altavilla and Prince of Cerami.

The monk, however, put a clause to his donation; this clause, which foresaw for the return of the convent in possession of the heirs of Damiano Rosso when the monks would have left the building, became public only in 1886 when the ecclesiastical properties were claimed by the State.
In 1896 the heirs of Red Altavilla turned the convent into hotel, transforming the cells into 40 elegant rooms.

On the ruins of the church of the convent, which was destroyed during the bombings of July 9, 1943, today there is conference hall, where you can admire the remains of altars.

On the seventeenth-century portal, which leads to the former convent, is still visible the emblem of the Dominican order; moreover, of the ancient structure are still visible two cloisters.
