The beautiful Church of St. Filippo the Apostle is the most important in the Giudecca district. Despite being closed for long restoration, in March 2010, the church was reopened.

The church was built in site where once stood the fifteenth-century Jewish synagogue of Siracusa in 1742. Its construction was financed by the “Brotherhood of St. Philip,” which transformed the “miqwaot” of the preexisting synagogue in burial vault for the deceased confreres, accessible by an opening near church entrance.

The facade is decorated with Corinthian-style decor and the churchyard is bordered by two stone obelisks.

Inside, the church is divided into three aisles decorated with stucco-work and you can admire the marble altar and the statues of “Santa Maria Addolarata”, “Santa Maria Assunta” and “San Francesco of Paola”, and the urn of the “Cristo Morto” (carried in procession, with the Addolorata, during the Good Friday).
