Akrai’s colony was founded in 664-663 BC. by the Syracusans Corinthians. Destroyed by the Arabs at the apex of its glory in the 827 BC., the ruins of the city of Akrai were rediscovered only in the nineteenth century.
Archaeological excavations have brought to light the main road axis, crossed by secondary roads that passe through the two gates of the city.

In the nineteenth century archaeologists discovered Akrai’s theater. The remains of it were the orchestra, from the scene to the low steps of the auditorium, then rebuilt up to the twelfth step.
On the agorà are still visible remains of “bouleuterion”, the building hosting the polis’ council of ancient Greece.

To the south of the theater, on a hill that is the highest point of Akrai, there are the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Aphrodite.

To the east of the theater can be seen the latomie of Intagliata and of Intagliatella; stone quarries used by Christians and Byzantines as tombs and houses.
